How we picked and tested
There are plenty of product roundups but we found no pre-existing research on the best qualities of the humble drinking glass, so we did two things: We researched the materials glasses are made out of, and we called up an expert glassblower.
Zachary Rudolph, an instructor at the Bay Area Glass Institute, told us a great glass “can’t be too wide because you want to be able to get your hand around it. It should feel nice in your hand. It shouldn’t be too heavy and when you bring it to your mouth to drink, your lips should just fit right around the rim, and it shouldn’t get in the way of your nose. You also want a nice thick bottom so when you set it down it’s not going to slide off the table.” Many of us have probably seen a lightweight glass hydroplane across a wet table, so this makes sense.
Through research we also decided that a perfect all-purpose drinking vessel should be made of tempered glass, a process that heats and cools the glassware in a way that makes it more durable and break-resistant (read more about that here). And when it does break, it does so in a less dangerous manner than untreated glass, crumbling into dull bits (relatively speaking – it’s still glass), as opposed to shards. This is what a kitchen needs!
We narrowed down the field with these criteria and ruled out restaurant options, like these Anchor Hocking glasses, because no matter where you look for them they’re only available in packs of 32.
A thin-walled, thick-bottomed Schott Zwiesel bar glass was heavy enough to shatter a stone tile.
Duralex is the heritage brand; they’re the Pendleton, Filson, or Heath Ceramics of glassware.
Our favorite all-purpose glass is the Duralex Picardie because using it feels great. But it also has less abstract qualities that make it ideal tableware—it’s made of shatter-resistant tempered glass, it’s lightweight enough that lifting it isn’t a chore, it stacks in cabinets, and it fits in the dishwasher. In the pantheon of drinking vessels, Duralex is the heritage brand; they’re the Pendleton, Filson, or Heath Ceramics of glassware. They also happen to perform better than anything else out there.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
Glass can still break. After all, it’s glass. The fact that we can drop it, heat it, chill it, bump it, topple it, jam it in the dishwasher, toast with it, chuck it in cabinets, and pound it onto a table over and over again for years is kind of an everyday miracle.
The Bormioli Rocco Rock Bar glasses survived all but the most extreme of our drop tests and they are lightweight, dishwasher-safe, and extremely compact when stacked. In fact, they were our former top pick, but over time we’ve come to notice how important the extra attention to detail is on the Picardie.
You can verify your purchase by checking for the logo on the bottom.
Of the four glasses that survived the most extreme drop, two of them were from Bormioli. So if you have finished concrete floors in your house and bump this off a table, there’s a good chance it’ll survive.
The Bormioli Rocco Rock Bar glass hitting concrete from 4inches up.
Care and maintenance
Though we stress-tested our glasses, tempered glass isn’t meant to withstand extreme hot/cold temperature changes, so try to avoid abusing glasses that way. Porcelain and stoneware are better at handling hot liquids, so put your daily cup of coffee in those.
About Plastics and Plastic Care, Clearlyacrylic
At Starbucks, iced teas are available in four sizes, instead of the usual three.
Usually, Starbucks drinks are only offered in three sizes—Tall, Grande and Venti. However, a new size was added exclusively for iced teas, iced tea lemonades and iced coffees. This monstrous 30-ounce cup is called the Trenta.
All iced teas and iced tea lemonades come sweetened with Classic syrup by default. Classic syrup is a simple syrup, which is basically a fancy way of saying sugar water or liquid sugar. The standard amount of pumps are as follows:
Shaken Iced Teas
Why are they called shaken? Because that’s how we prepare them! All Starbucks iced teas are made in shakers with equal parts tea and water. Ice and sweetener are added, and the drink is shaken before it is served. This evenly chills the tea and ensures any sweetener is thoroughly mixed in.
Every part of this drink can be customized. For a stronger tea, ask for light or no water, and to make it weaker, feel free to add extra water and extra ice.
Technically, any of the Teavana teas can be made iced. It takes a few minutes to make them, though, so I wouldn’t recommend ordering one that’s not a standard menu iced tea if you’re in a hurry or are going through a drive-thru.
To make a non-standard iced tea, the barista has to first steep the tea, then pour it over ice. This takes at least five minutes for green and herbal teas, and a little less time for the black teas. I’m sure that any barista would be happy to do this for you, but as it is not a common request, they may have to step away to look up the recipe!
The teas that are brewed in the store are actually made with bags that are specially designed for the way that Starbucks baristas brew their iced tea. They use one of these special tea bags, then steep it in one liter of hot water for five minutes, then top it off with a scoop of ice (to make it immediately cool,) and cold water. This tea is what is added to the shakers – it’s brewed double strength so that it doesn’t taste watered down when water and ice are added.
Below are the standard iced teas that are brewed daily in Starbucks stores.
If you’re looking for a standard ice tea, this is the closest we offer. If you were a fan of the old black iced tea, which was a bit stronger, try ordering this without the water added. In summer 2014, Starbucks changed tea brands to Teavana. The Teavana Black tea tastes very similar to the Tazo tea we used to use.
The green iced tea offered in Starbucks is made using Teavana Jade Citrus Mint tea. It’s minty and lemony, which may sound off-putting, but it’s very refreshing. I prefer to drink this over the black tea, though it has a bit less caffeine.
Our only decaf iced tea, Passion Tango Tea is very fruity. I’ve noticed that it’s a popular choice for kids, and though I think part of that is because it’s red, the flavor is also great. I like to drink mine with a little bit of sweet and low because it works well with the tea’s tart and fruity flavor.
Starbucks has great reusable iced cups that really keep your drinks cold. If you’re a daily iced tea drinker, you should pick one up!
Black Tea Lemonade
A very refreshing twist on the usual black iced tea, this drink is similar to an Arnold Palmer. The lemonade itself is sweetened, but not a lot. If you don’t have much of a sweet tooth, I wouldn’t recommend adding additional sweetener.
Passion Tea Lemonade
This reminds me of other fruit flavored teas I’ve drunk. It’s tart and tangy, and I love it on a summer day. Most of the baristas at my store would highly recommend trying this with raspberry syrup, and I totally agree. I have a bit of a sweet tooth, and I only take two pumps of raspberry in a venti, though (which usually gets six.) My reasoning for this is that the Passion tea is already tart, with a tart lemonade added, and then the raspberry…
Peach Green Tea and Peach Green Tea Lemonade
This seasonal offering features the same Green Iced Tea that is the standard, but it is sweetened with Peach syrup. The syrup does contain sugar, so unfortunately this is not available unsweetened. This has been featured in the past with Tazo tea, so hopefully Peach syrup will make a come back every summer!
Blackberry Mojito Tea and Blackberry Mojito Tea Lemonade
Blackberry syrup is a totally new offering for Summer 201It has a great berry flavor, and is not as sweet as some of the other syrups we offer. For example, I think this drink is much less sweet than a standard sweetened iced tea or the Peach Green Tea. The Blackberry Mojito Tea and Tea Lemonade is made with Green Iced Tea and sweetened with the Blackberry syrup.
What Other Tea Lovers Say
Tea has become a major part of life for people throughout the world, and each culture has created its own types of tea ware.
In terms of quality and flavor, there really is no comparison between loose leaves and tea bags.
However, brewing loose-leaf tea requires a little bit more equipment than brewing tea bags. You need something to hold the tea leaves while they steep.
The most common way to make loose tea is to brew the leaves in a tea pot and then pour into a cup. Like tea kettles (click to read further reviews), tea pots come in an astonishing variety of shapes and sizes.
How do you know what type of tea pot to buy? When selecting, there are four major factors to consider.
Want something to impress your guest? They come in a variety of styles and finishes, and they can be more attractive than you might think.
Stainless steel tea pots are durable and low-maintenance. To me, they are a good all-rounder, and are especially suitable for brewing the fully oxidized tea such as the dark oolongs, darjeelings and pu-erhs.
Stainless steel doesn’t affect the taste of the tea and it doesn’t absorb flavors. It is are also good at retaining heat.
Porcelain or Ceramic
Porcelain pots are classic. They are like the viola, somewhere in between the violin and cello, and very versatile.
I use them to brew my white tea and green tea, as well as lightly oxidized oolongs such as the Iron Goddess tea (Tieguanyin).
Porcelain ware is also excellent for testing any tea. Unlike a clay pot, it doesn’t absorb flavors and so is good for an quick and objective assessment of tea quality.
If you are new to drinking Chinese tea, I highly recommend that you get yourself a gaiwan, which is probably the simplest and most useful tea vessel ever invented.
This tea bowl has a lid. It serves to retain heat and as a strainer. You can drink directly out of the bowl, or pour it out into another cup (which I what I normally do).
Another important aspect of design is the method used to strain out the tea leaves.
Many pots come with a separate basket-type strainer that holds the tea leaves while they brew. Other tea pots have a strainer in the spout.
Having the strainer built into the spout is convenient, but you have to pour the tea into cups as soon as it is ready. However, having the strainer in the spout does maximize the tea leaves’ contact area with the water, and gives them unrestricted freedom to unfurl and move around.
Having the strainer built into the spout is convenient, but you have to pour the tea into cups as soon as it’s ready. However, having the strainer in the spout does maximize the tea leaves’ contact area with the water, and gives them unrestricted freedom to unfurl and move around.
This is important for flavor, but as long as your infuser is adequately sized, you can still get great flavor from an infuser basket.
How big is the pot? The right size depends on how you are planning to use it.
If it is just for you, go ahead and get a smaller pot. That way, you don’t waste tea, and can drink all of what you brew while it’s hot and fresh.
If it’s going to be used for tea parties or entertaining, however, you’ll want to get a bigger pot so that you can serve everyone without having to stop what you are doing and brew more tea.
The next concern is maintenance. All tea pots require at least a little bit of maintenance.
Do you want one that is dishwasher safe, or are you okay with hand washing? Is that adorable tea pot in the shape of a dragon going to be easy to clean?
Yixing clay pots are perhaps the easiest to care for – a good rinse in hot water is all they need, since you want the tea residue to coat the inside and season it.
Glass pots are dishwasher safe, as are stainless steel and some ceramics.
Silver is hand wash only, and it will need to periodically polished with silver polish as well, even if it is not being used.
How To Choose A Yerba Mate Gourd
The mate cups unique shape compresses the yerba mate tea in order to create suction for nutrient extraction, and preserves the high level of nutrients.
More exciting, artisans create each unique mate cup from wood or a special squash. These ancient tools continue to serve as the perfect vessels for yerba mate. Indeed, they are married, as ‘yerba’ is the herb and ‘mate’ is the gourd. Using this specially shaped mate gourd is the secret to maximizing the benefits of yerba mate. mate straw, also called a bombilla, is more than just a “straw;” it acts as a pressurized extraction filter.
Artisans create each bombilla with different characteristics. It is easier to select a bombilla when you understand the role of shape, length, tips, filters, and materials.
Yerba Mate straws are available in stainless steel, alpaca, and bamboo.
Stainless Steel Bombilla : Strong, durable, no need to polish
Alpaca Bombilla : Strong, durable, traditionally used metal, impressive shine with quick and easy dry rag, more detailed metalwork available from artisans.
Bamboo Bombilla: Strong, ancient tool. Not as durable as metal mate straws, and are a bit more likely to clog. Still, they work great and look awesome.
Mate Straw Shape
Each type of mate straw is available in two shapes, straight or curved.
Straight mate straws are considered the most traditional and best way to honor the yerba mate; drink while looking down into the herb (a.k.a. meditative)
Straight mate straws are suggested for those choosing a large mate gourd, as curved straws often do not fit into the largest of mate gourds.
Curved mate straws are considered the most helpful with staying engaged; drink while looking forward (a.k.a. mindful)
Curved mate straws are not suggested for use in the largest of mate gourds, as they do not fit very well.
Mate Straw Length
Long mate straws works best to keep the bombilla from becoming too hot on the lips
Long mate straws are a necessity when using the larger mate gourds.
Short mate straws works best with smaller mate gourds, providing better balance from its lower center of gravity mate straws are not suggested for use in larger gourds, as they don’t protrude enough from the top.
Choosing a Yerba Mate Tea
Yerba mate tea is a blend of yerba mate stems and leaves that are used in the mate gourd. The traditional “best” yerba mate blend contains approximately 12% yerba mate stems and 88% yerba mate leaf. The stems help keep the bombilla from clogging and reduce the bitterness of the yerba mate. There are three common blends that one can buy: Traditional, Suave, and Leaf-Style. Of course, one can buy all types of yerba mate additives with these blends.
Also called ‘saquitas’
Small, gram yerba mate bags are available for steeping in water.
The experience of soaking grams of Yerba Mate can not be compared to the Traditional Method’s experience of extracting the nutrients from over 40 grams of compressed yerba mate.
Sometimes we sacrifice the “best” nutrient extraction method of the gourd and straw with a quick indulgance of a yerba mate tea bag.
Tea bags also serve as a great addition to refreshing iced tea blends
The Insider Pick
Tea leaves are far superior to tea bags, but things get messy without a proper tea infuser. The Finum Brewing Basket is the best tea infuser for most mugs and teapots with its roomy fine mesh basket design.
Tea is serious business and real aficionados prefer loose leaf tea over the leftover leaves most companies stuff into tea bags. However, if you want to brew tea properly, you are going to need the right equipment. In addition to getting one of the best electric kettles to bring your water to just the right temperature for the leaves you’re using, you’ll also want a tea infuser to separate the leaves from your brew once it’s ready.
Picking the best tea infuser sounds like a simple task, but it’s actually quite complicated. Tea experts will even tell you not to get an infuser and truly let your tea leaves float in the hot water to maximize their flavor. If you’re going to follow that approach, you’ll still need a strainer to keep the leaves out of your drink. However, you can get the flavor or uninhibited tea leaves with the best tea infusers. The more space you give your tea leaves to move around inside the infuser, the better.
We’ve researched tea blogs, read expert reviews, and done our own personal testing to find the very best tea infusers you can buy. We also selected the best tea infuser travel mug and teapot to accommodate those who want to drink tea on the go or consume a whole pot’s worth. Before we get into our picks, here are things to consider when choosing the best tea infuser for your needs and a few tips on how to make the most of your tea.

Mr. Coffee Quart Iced Tea Maker – Best Iced Tea Maker 2018
What would I loose, after all even the price of this Tea maker was amazing.
This one is definitely for everybody who is enjoying drinking a lot of iced tea as it will save you a lot of time!
This product is incredibly easy to use.
All you have to do is add some water, chuck the tea bags or you can even use loose leaf with some coffee filters. You need to put the ice into the pitcher and if you are short on ice you can always use cold water instead. Turn it on and in minutes you’ll have yourself perfectly cold tea, you don’t even need to supervise it as it will automatically switch itself off when the brewing process is ready.
Although you can choose the brew strength the tea can still seem diluted. It really depends on personal taste and in that case you can experiment with adding less ice and/or using more tea bags or more loose leaf. It might take 2-tries but you will be able to achieve the taste you are after.
Overall this Iced tea maker works very well the design is good and you shouldn’t be having any problems with leaks. Straightforward and easy to use allowing for some variety depending on personal preferences. Does the job amazingly fast gives you a great capacity.
