What to look for

Rhubarb forced crop is light pink, but the outdoor crop is a green/dark pink colour. Forced crop is generally sweeter, but is only available for a limited time. The best prices on rhubarb are during spring and summer.

Cherries should have fresh green stems and glossy fruit. Being ‘homegrown’, UK cherries can be left on the tree longer, and those extra few hours or days of sunshine build the sweetness inside.

Plums in the UK may look different to most of the imported varieties and are more oval in shape, with a green colour to the skin. Do not let that deceive you, though – this fruit is full of sweetness and picked to perfection.

Dinnerware Pieces

Salad Plates – Used for serving salad in restaurants or salad buffets. Often made with a pebbled texture.

Service Plates – Used for the main entree. Service plates are often brought to the table by a member of the wait staff.

Saucers – Usually paired with a teacup or mug, saucers keep hot liquids off of the table and are a classier dinnerware piece.

Pasta bowls – More often than not, this type of bowl tends to be shallow, almost resembling a plate.

Platters – Used to serve larger entrees or even appetizers. Great for presenting foods like roasts, whole fish, and intact poultry.

Soup bowls – Deeper than pasta bowls, soup bowls are made with or without handles. Handled soup bowls keep the hands from burning and are great for use with French Onion soup.

Mugs – Also considered drinkware. Mugs usually match the dinnerware being used and are designed for holding hot beverages like tea, coffee, or hot cocoa.

Dessert dish / cup – Dessert dishes are used to present sweet foods like ice cream, fruits, or even pudding. This piece is often found in cafeteria or restaurant settings.

Porcelain is an attractive choice and is considered a classic where dinnerware is concerned. Porcelain is made by firing (or heating) materials like clay and can be tempered for extra durability. While porcelain is a great choice for sit down restaurants, cafes, and even catering businesses it is easier to break than other dinnerware materials. dinnerware is a perfect choice for salad bars and sit down restaurants. While glass dinnerware looks great paired with any sort of meal it is much more fragile than any of the other dinnerware materials. Glass dinnerware also comes in tempered safety glass versions, like Duralex dinnerware, that are much more difficult to shatter.

Styrene Acrylonitrile (or better known as ) is a common plastic material. Dinnerware pieces made with SAN are usually best for quick serve restaurants, buffets, and cafeterias. While SAN dinnerware is chemical resistant, heat resistant, and scratch resistant it has its downsides. SAN yellows more quickly than other types of plastic dinnerware.

Polycarbonate is a plastic that features great light transmitting abilities. It can be very transparent but can also be made in several solid colors. While polycarbonate has often been used for bottles, drinkware, and food containers many shun it due to the use of BPA in the manufacturing process.

Melamine is also a plastic material. Melamine is nearly unbreakable and is a common choice in healthcare industries, hotels, and even restaurants. Because Melamine is lighter than porcelain (easier for the wait staff to carry) and can still be made into many different colors and designs, its use in the food service industry is only growing. Melamine can be stained by foods like tomato if they are left on too long.

Welcome To The World Of Juicing

Juicing has become a major trend throughout the world over the past few years. This healthy way to ingest fruits and vegetables is taking the health industry (and the average Joe) by storm.

Trainers, athletes, professionals and families alike have begun to juice everything from to apples to carrot in an effort to embrace a healthier lifestyle.

As an alternative to buying drinks from a juice bar or café, more and more consumers are purchasing juicers for their homes so they can take advantage of all of what juicing has to offer on a daily basis at a more reasonable cost.

This is my Juicer Buying Guide which will help you pick the perfect type of juicer for your life and needs.

Masticating Juicers

Getting ready to buy yourself a masticating juicer? Not sure which one will best suits your needs and budget? No problem, we’ve got all our masticating juicer listed below. Known for producing better quality juice across a wider range of fruits and vegetables, masticating juicers are the preferred choice for enthusiasts everywhere.

Triturating Juicers

Triturating juicers are the workhorses of the juicing industry. With dual augers they squeeze every bit of liquid out of the fiber from produce; yielding the best possible juice. Pulp comes out as dry as it can get, but triturating juicers tend to be more expensive than cheaper masticating or centrifugal ones. Find out what are the top models–here.

The Centrifugal Juicer

The most common juicer on the market right now is the centrifugal juicer. To use this model, you would place the fruits or vegetables down a chute into a basket with tiny teeth that spins. The teeth with grind the food into a soft texture while it spins.

Then, because it is spinning so fast the juice will be extracted from the solid food and drained out of the juicer into a cup. The leftover pieces of the fruits and vegetables end up in a pulp dispenser so they can be thrown away or used for another purpose.

The Masticating Juicer

A masticating juicer works a little bit different from both these other juicers. In this machine, food is pushed into a chute that has a slow-moving blade powered by a motor. Instead of spinning the food, it is “chewed” into mush then pushed down to release the juice.

There are plenty of masticating juicer types: you could buy a horizontal masticating juicer or a vertical model which is a little easier to feed.

The Triturating Juicer

Two gears (twin-gear), instead of one, gets you the triturating juicer. Twin-gear action rotates inward with a tiny gap for grinding and pulverizing fruits and veggies. Throughout this process, the juice is released and collected.

The gears rotate slowly so the structure of the cells is not disrupted and oxidized. Soft produce can easily be juiced in this type of device but harder vegetables like carrots can be challenging as food has to be pushed into the machine.

A variety of attachments are available for this type of juicer including pulp output controls or a pasta-making spout. You will get more juice from your produce when using a twin-gear, triturating juicer than if you use a one-gear, masticating juicer.

Helpful Hints

For items not listed, appetizer pieces per person is a safe guideline for a host to follow.

Fresh vegetables can be prepared the day before your party. Store in storage bag or container and add several ice cubes to keep vegetables crisp until serving.

When it comes to beverages, adjust amounts according to the type of gathering and the drinking habits of your guests. Always remember to provide non-alcoholic beverages.

Keep a bucket of ice water handy to chill wine before serving.

To prevent misplacing of beverages, provide your guests with wine charms and/or personalized beverage holders.

Example 2

You can also use the ingredient list to make informed food choices. For example, to choose frozen or canned vegetables and fruit that have no added sugar you can look at the ingredient list for sugar. Examples of sugars include: corn syrup, dextrose, fructose, glucose, malt syrup, invert sugar and concentrated fruit juice.

Maintenance tips Keep the fridge at least six inches away from the wall, far from heat sources and direct sunlight. Don’t keep hot meals in the fridge as this increases the load and affects efficiency. Change thermostat levels according to the season and ambient temperature. Don’t keep the door open for more than three minutes. Keep your fridge full but not overloaded for better cooling and lower electricity bills. Cover liquids, vegetables and fruits as low temperatures absorb their nutrition. Keep the coils clean for a more efficient fridge. Use a thin layer of Vaseline as first aid on dried or cracked seals. You’ll have to eventually replace them—this will cost a lot but it will reduce the electricity consumption and increase efficiency.

To lengthen the life of the fruits, store them in the refrigerator in a low moisture drawer, but only with other fruits. The refrigerator does not make the fruit more or less ripe but simply stops the process in time. Take the peaches out the night before eating.

Picking out melons can seem like a difficult task compared to other fruits and vegetables that are easily felt for ripeness and defects. Melons bring a whole new challenge with their large size and thick skin. They also do not continue to ripen once picked, so it is important to find one that is already ripe for that sweet flavor. When looking for a good melon, first look for bruising, soft spots or cracks.

Store ripe melons in the refrigerator. Only cut melon before eating. But if the melon is cut, it should be wrapped tightly with plastic wrap and stored in the refrigerator immediately.

A Mongoose and Black Mamba Fight to Death

A mongoose is lightning fast and has razor-sharp teeth. A black mamba can kill 1grown men with just one bite. Which of these two mortal enemies will win?

Whale milk is some of the richest milk available to any mammal. A baby whale will drink 150 gallons of it a day to sustain its dramatic growth.
