However, we were less than thrilled to see the addition of sugar here. Typically, there’s only added sugar in BBQ varieties. You know the drill: added sugars are addicting and can cause weight gain and even make you sick.

Pringles Original

Not only are these crisps downright addicting, they’ve been splashed with soybean oil, a fat that may increase appetite and slow the rate at which the body burns fat, causing you to pack on the pounds. In fact, researchers have gone so far as to say that when it comes to weight gain, soybean oil may be far worse than sugar, the food world’s current problem child. Shocking, right? Herr’s Ketchup Flavored Potato Chips

If you’re one of those people who puts ketchup on literally everything, you’re probably tempted to indulge in these chips. But proceed with caution. Combining two salty items can only produce one result: sky-high sodium and fat. One serving contains grams of fat and 300 mg of sodium. Stay away from these chips and these 150 Worst Packaged Foods in America to keep the pounds flying off your frame.

Lay’s Sour Cream and Onion

The nutritional profile of these and Ruffles’ Original are about the same. However, if you go for volume, you can eat more five more of these chips. Plus, they contain less calories, fat and sodium.

Ruffles Original

Lay’s Sour Cream and Onion outrank these Classic Ruffles nutritionally, and although these may have a more pleasing texture, they’re not worth the eye-popping fat content. (Trivia: Ruffles was originally created to mimic the ruffles in fabric during the late 1950s. Its design was supposed to prevent breakage.)

Ruffles Cheddar and Sour Cream

Similar to the Potato Skin version above, these Ruffles rank second-to-worst by a mere milligrams of sodium. But sodium counts big time. For every extra gram of salt you eat in a day—that’s a mere ⅕ of a teaspoon, or about what you’ll find in one of those tiny salt packets from the soup shop—your risk of obesity climbs by 2percent, according to a study at Queen Mary University in London. Researchers speculate that sodium alters our metabolism, changing the way we absorb fat.

One serving of these Fritos costs you grams of fat and 270 milligrams of sodium, both diet demons. If the possibility of absorbing more fat doesn’t scare you, an increased risk of cancer should.

Ultimate pub grub “Without question, the humble fried potato, the chip, is a gastronomic phenomenon in itself. The ability potatoes have to get mega crispy on the outside and super-fluffy in the middle when cooked is so good. Skinny and shoestring fries are delicious, but a proper fat handcut chip is something else. So who was the original inventor of the ketchup chip? One camp claims American company Herrs deserves the credit — they even partnered with ketchup-giant Heinz to make the seasoning for their ketchup chips. Others declare that the Hostess company (now Frito-Lay Canada) created the flavour in the early 1970s, and Canadians have been enjoying them ever since. But as neither company has stepped forward to claim the title of official creator, its true origins remain a mystery.

This was the favourite of our online engagement manager Brett Placzek, who spent her formative snacking years in the U.S. She declared the lightly seasoned chip “a good gateway chip for ketchup chip newbies.”

Kingfisher Fish and Chips in Plympton, Plymouth, won the prestigious top spot.

Heat the oven to 190C/fan170C/gas Line two baking sheets with non-stick baking paper.

Put the butter and sugars into a bowl and beat until creamy. Beat in the vanilla and egg.

Sieve the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt into the bowl and mix it in with a wooden spoon. Add the chocolate chips and stir well.

Use a teaspoon to make small scoops of the mixture, spacing them well apart on the baking trays. This mixture should make about 30 cookies.

Bake for 8–mins until they are light brown on the edges and still slightly soft in the centre if you press them.

Leave on the tray for a couple of minutes to set and then lift onto a cooling rack.

Freezing the biscuits

If you’ve frozen the biscuits, take them out and arrange them on a lined baking sheet. Once defrosted, pop them in a medium oven 190C/ 170 fan/ gas mark and heat for – mins to crisp up. Don’t leave them too long or they’ll dry out.

Ice Cromer is our  Ice Cream kiosk, serving Lakenham Creamery ice cream, Coffees and Doughnuts.  Sitting right on the corner of New Street, offering takeaway and of course the selection is available to everyone visiting the restaurant. All ice cream is produced for us from scratch, and all ingredients sourced (even the milk!) from the heart of Norfolk in conjunction with Lakenham Creamery.

Open every day and right on the sea front, Ice Cromer is the perfect place to grab a quick drink, snack and of course Ice Cream. We have a large selection available, with a upto 1 flavours including: Mint Chocolate Chip, Strawberry, Raspberry, Rum & Raisin, Vanilla and one of our favourites, Bubble gum.

We can also offer Whippy ice creams in strawberry and vanilla, as well as hot sugar donuts and Sundaes; including our quite different Doughnut Sundae, Doughnut base with Whippy ice cream, chocolate sauce and nut topping.

Ice Cromer is the only place you will find the latest equipment and freshest Ice Cream in Cromer.

Spencer and his wife Racheal Gray grew up in Norfolk and have strong connections to the coast and the sea. Spencers grandfather owned a number of local fishing boats out of Cromer and Kings Lynn, landing local fish and of course the famous Cromer Crab. Many of his boats also returned hundreds of soldiers from Dunkirk in the second world war.

We next evaluated performance of the six methods on data from a TbxChIP-seq experiment to assess whether trends are similar to those revealed by our simulations. Figure and

Supplementary Figure Sshow the fraction of the top n peaks that are within 100 bp of a Tbxmotif. BCP and GEM do particularly well relative to the other methods for TbxMotif (Figure 4). Figure and

Supplementary Figure Sdisplays the empirical distribution of the shortest distance of the called peaks to each of the Tbxmotifs for each method. GEM stands out among all the methods in terms of the fraction of its peaks being closer to a Tbxmotif than any of the other methods. GEM has the highest fraction of the top 500 peaks with either of two binding motifs of Tbx5, and 50% of its peaks are within 100 bp of a motif (Motif 1; Figure 4). Only 10% of the called peaks of the other methods are within 100 bp of the same Tbxmotif (Figure 4).

Supplementary Figure S12

Once the candidate peaks have been identified, the different methods typically rank candidates by their significance of a hypothesis test that compares the counts in the corresponding genomic regions of the ChIP and input samples. This test has mostly been implemented as a ‘Poisson’ (of 30, ) test or by ‘fold-change or Normalized Difference’ (of 30,

Supplementary Table S). There are methods that rank the peaks by some ‘posterior’ measure (of 30,

Supplementary Table S) that could be the posterior probability of binding at a given genomic region or the posterior rate of counts in a given genomic region. Additionally, there are methods that explicitly use the underlying genome sequence (of 30,

Supplementary Table S) or the shape of the candidate peaks (of 30,

Supplementary Table S) in assigning significance values. Binomial versus Poisson Test

BCP and MACShave the best operating characteristics on simulated data (Figures 2,

Supplementary Figures Sand S). Could this be because of how these methods test candidate peaks for statistical significance? BCP and MACSuse the Poisson test, whereas MUSIC and GEM use the Binomial test. To explore this question, we first used simulations (Methods) to directly compare Poisson and Binomial tests on a predefined set of candidate peaks. These empirical results show that the Poisson test is more powerful at detecting enriched regions, while maintaining a reasonable Type I error rate (Figure 8). Second, we implemented modified versions of BCP and MUSIC that expand the methods to allow either a Binomial or Poisson test. Our Poisson test version of BCP and Binomial test version of MUSIC are essentially the same as in the original methods. In this approach, we are using the read counts in the regions called peaks by each method and performing the statistical test in two ways. The operating characteristics of both versions of each method are hardly distinguishable (

Supplementary Figures S1and S1). However, in real situations, one works with a set of peaks identified by a chosen threshold. Analyzed this way, rather than over all possible thresholds, the Poisson version of each method is clearly better (


We performed a benchmarking study and systematic evaluation of the features of ChIP-seq peak calling methods that drive their relative performance.

Our benchmarking analysis included six methods that are representative of the different features of ChIP-seq software tools. Overall, BCP and MACShave the best operating characteristics on simulated transcription factor binding data. On real TbxChIP-seq data, GEM stood out in terms of how close its peaks are to the primary binding motif of TbxBCP and MUSIC perform best on histone ChIP-seq data.

Key Points

Peak calling using Chip-seq data consists of two sub-problems: identifying candidate peaks and testing candidate peaks for statistical significance.

Twelve features of the two sub-problems of peak calling methods are identified.

Methods that explicitly combine the signals from ChIP and input samples to define candidate peaks are less powerful than methods that do not.

Methods that use windows of different sizes to scan the genome for potential peaks are more powerful than ones that do not.

Methods that use a Poisson test to rank their candidate peaks are more powerful than those that use a Binomial test.
