Nerf Mastodon, Rhino-Fire, TriStrike, Zombie Slingfire, Strongarm, N-Strike Elite Hyperfire and more make the cut
If you’re looking for the answer to the question “what’s the best Nerf gun or blaster” then you’ve come to the right place.
That’s because we’ll tell you right now that the best Nerf gun is the N-Strike Mega Mastodon Blaster.
It is awesome – one of the first automatic blasters that fires off the Mega darts, the Mastodon does so at an impressive speed driven by the addition, at your expense (of course) of six D batteries.
But if it’s not the one for you, then check out our guide to the best Nerf gun or blaster below.
Hasbro has been coming up with such inventive names as Zombie Strike Doominator and the Heartbreaker Bow for its blasters since 1969.
Nerf’s originality has continued in 2016, where we’ve seen all manner of great foam blaster(s) appear. These have ranged from tiny side arms like the Elite Jolt Blaster to heavy-foam-hardware like the Rhino Strike Elite.
What’s more impressive though, is that the blasters are as fun as their names imply and have helped Hasbro sell enough darts over the last five years to circle the globe five times.
This is a seriously impressive feat for a product is an acronym for “Non-Expanding Recreational Foam” (Nerf) – there’s some top-notch pub quiz knowledge for you!

Big and expensive
We very much would’ve liked to be in the meeting where they named this number, we’re thinking it was late Friday afternoon, sun shining outside, two execs at Hasbro shouted a couple of random words – done deal, packaging sent to printers and its pub o’ clock. This double-barrel blaster can be floor/desk mounted for accuracy or stick the stock into your side and walk directly towards your target with swagger. Both intimidating and impressive the Rhino Fire achieves decent distances, the downside of this is picking up the contents of both 2dart barrels you’ve expended.
Big range and a round range of close to 60mph makes the Zeus a sharpshooters dream
Six rounds is all you get
It is easy to arm up the air chamber at the rear in super-quick succession on this often overlooked blaster. This is a superb six-dart shooter that is about one of the best in the manual line-up and unleashes with excellent accuracy and achieves impressive distances. An absolute must have in any Nerf arsenal as a back-up blaster for cover. There are also tactical rails atop this one should you decide to accessories with other elements.
Single shot only
This deceptive single-shot, manual-powered blaster is one that you really shouldn’t travel anywhere without. A superb quick-fix for when you eye a target on your daily grind for a pot shot and one that can be secreted about your person easily when your opponents are acquiring your arsenal, your last-chance-at-the-saloon-shooter. For a blaster that punches above its weight for both distance and power this one is unsurpassed.
Not wallet friendly
So, whilst the sun has his hat on it is certainly time to invest in a water blaster. The Super Soaker range isn’t the most wallet friendly range around, but, for H20 delivery toward target and with pressure unbranded units just won’t do. Pump up for action, a steady stream of ammo is delivered but a major surprise for retaliators returning with you back to base for a refill. This one connects up to the hose for unlimited ammo, also a fun way to water the plants.
Only fires a single tennis ball
You’ll have seen those manual tennis ball flinging things in the park, some say a lazy way to exercise your pooch, we disagree, this is much lazier. A spring-loaded blaster that’ll send your sphere distances approaching 50 feet, much to the envy of other dog owners. So long as your canine is versed on the fetch and drop technique you don’t even have to bend to pick up the ball, just dunk the end of the blaster over it and its done.
Looking for the worlds fastest manufacturer produced foam dart firing machine? Here it is, Hyperfire by name, etc etc. Unleashing five darts per second from its 2dart chamber it’ll not take any Carol Vorderman scale academics to figure out you’ll be spending plenty of time on the Nerf trail picking up so ensure you’ve a back-up stash. The deluge of darts it rains upon your target is rapid enough to send them into a mild confusion for a while affording you some extra time to reload.

One of the most basic nerf gun is the Nerf N-strike Jolt Blaster. This is super portable and easy to hide in your pocket. Start fighting at any moments with this simple but cool nerf gun. Nerf Zombie Strike FlipFury Blaster
So you hate reloading, right? If your answer is yes, then grab this blaster and fire up to 1dirt without loading. This hardcore zombie strike flipFury blaster comes with two six dart drums and 1zombie strike darts. You will be able to fire the dart for about feet.
NERF N-Strike Mega Series Roto Fury Blaster
NERF N-Strike Mega Series Roto Fury Blaster is popular for its sturdy design and robust performance. This gun shoots big mega darts with excellent accuracy. Once you hold down the trigger, it will start firing.
Money Well Invested
These water gun fights give everyone a chance to cool down in the afternoon heat and offer a chance to compete in real life rather than a video game. Since pressure water guns can shoot a long distance, even my little seven years old can compete with her 13-year-old brother Brendan and his friends. In fact, because she is so short and can hide better than anyone else, she is actually a sought-after member of the team.
I love the fact that fun games like water gun wars allow both boys and girls and kids of all ages to play together. It has been well worth the investment to get a compressed air water gun for each of my kids and a couple of extras for friends.
However, compressed water guns are not just for kids! My husband likes to join the action and even high school and college age kids like to use them to cool off. In fact, the Nerf ad uses college age guys in their video advertisement.
You can still buy those old-fashioned clear plastic water pistols for a buck or two, but after seeing the new compressed air water guns, most kids don’t want to turn back. However, high powered water guns are more than a buck or two and many of them claim to have the same features.
So which is the best water gun on the market right now? Does more money equal a better gun? Not necessarily.
One feature that isn’t advertised is that any of the guns that don’t have an automatic feature (batteries) can have their bottom part taken off so that the tube which takes in water is exposed. That way, they can be used at the pool by sticking the tube into the water and shooting away.
How much water it holds
It’s important for you to consider how much water a gun holds before you pick it. The amount of water held will directly or indirectly affect how often you will have to reload your gun. Of course, none of us wants to keep loading the water gun after every shootout as this would give your opponents a competitive advantage.
The shooting distance
How far can your water gun shoot? This is another important factor which has to be considered before you pick any of them. Unless you want to be shooting at yourself (pun intended), it’s important that you go for a gun boasting an incredible shooting distance. Whether it’s birds or friends you want to engage in a water gun warfare with, you can be sure that they won’t be closer than 10ft from you. For that reason, it’s advisable that you arm yourself a war machine which can crank up to at least 30ft.
Depending on who is going to be using the gun, weight has to be put into consideration. If you’re getting it for your kids, ensure that they can lift the fully loaded gun without having to struggle. This way, they will have fun without getting exhausted or too tired.
Nerf Breach Blast
An incredibly high capacity water gun, this is one of the best products on the market. Its 50 fl-oz capacity which can hold an impressive 147ml of water, it gives you an advantage over your opponents allowing you to shoot, shoot and shoot non-stop with a single load. If you have been using one of those half-baked water blasts which can’t even shoot beyond your toes, this gun will bring the 50s memories with a superb shooting distance of 38ft which is approximately 11.meters. Boasting a cutting edge quality and a crescendo performance with zero squirts, you can never go wrong with it.
AQUA ZOOKA Water Bazooka
As the name suggests, this is a high-impact bazooka which allows you to bomb down your opponents with streams of water unleashed one after the other in quick succession for unmatched performance. If you want to beat down your opponents to submission point or simply want to get rid of those stubborn weaverbirds, you can trust this bazooka to deliver. Easy to operate, it offers quick filling and re-filling which allows you to remain armed all through. And yes, it’s constructed using high-impact thermoplastics which ensure that you enjoy using it for seasons. Loading is a breeze; like all you have to do is dip it into a bucket or pool of water and then pull the handle back to syphon water into the barrel. After that, you are free to fire up to a distance of 60ft.
Nerf Freezefire Blaster
This is another entry into the renowned line of Nerf blasters which have dominated the market for a long time. With a capacity of 2ounces, it allows you to fire constantly and consistently without having to reload after every shot. And yes, if you want to take your opponent by surprise with an ice-cold blast, you can add some ice to make the experience even better. And yes, has a blaster added into the bargain to take the experience to the next level. The large opening allows you to add ice to the barrel giving you an advantage over your friends.
Nerf Scatterblast Blaster
Made using an extremely safe material, this Scatterblast gun is suitable for children of all ages. Of course, its quality is second to none while the durability is unmatched. What’s more, it delivers five streams of water simultaneously thus ensuring that you top-quality strong shots. The lightweight and compact design make it ideal for your kids even the smallest ones. And yes, it’s equally perfect for adults who want to a slice of the fun. With an ability to send streams up to 34ft, it allows you to fire at friends or pets even when they are away from you.

Its ABS plastic construction is not only safe for the environment but also equally safe for you and your family. Ideal for kids and adults, the strong shots it releases will make you feel like you’re on a battlefield. Of course, given the velocity at which it fires, it’s advisable that you avoid eyes and face in general since it could cause serious harm. Its trigger allows you to fire quickly and precisely using one hand.
Dazzling Toys water gun
This is a double-barreled water shooter which lets you fire like a pro with unmatched precision. Offering various colour options for you to choose your favourite, you can never go wrong with this gun. If you want to surprise you friends with excellent speed and quick loading process, try this gun. Its size makes it ideal for kids and equally perfect for adults.
Nerf Microburst Blaster
Microburst is another product in the Nerf line of production which is designed to offer super fast and incredible shots ensuring that you enjoy the whole process. Easy to use and fill, all you have to do is fill, pump and fire. And yes, it covers an impressive shooting distance of 33ft which makes it quite reliable. Its ability to hold 10-ounce of water at a time ensures that you keep firing for a considerable time.
Nerf Tidal Tube Blaster
Allowing you to soak your target with heavy shots, this is another great product on the market. Easy to use, all you have to do is pull back the slide and then start unleashing shots after shots continuously with easy reload mechanism. Blasting up to 2feet, although this isn’t the longest shooting distance, there’s no doubt that it’s quite impressive. The holding capacity is ounces which is sufficient enough to hold water for several shots.
The blaster plunger is a bit too hard to kids to pull and push.
Nerf Barrage Soaker
Barrage soaker boasts three modes to ensure that you switch from one level of fun to the next one conveniently and comfortably. With distance, scatter or flood modes, it allows you to switch between the modes according to your current situation. It has an incredible 84-ounce capacity which is arguably the largest I have come across on the market. With a shooting range of up to 3ft, you will love it.
When looking for the best water guns, it’s crucial that you check the capacity, the shooting distance and the comfort of all its accessories. This will help you get the best products. Given the products listed above, although each one of them boasts its unique features, one thing is common among all of them; quality.
Nerf War was written for primarily for Nerf fans ages and up, but it also addresses many parental concerns:

These won’t hold the weight of an adult very well, but at such a low price for a five-pack, they’re a far better deal if only kids will be using them.
As the patriarch of a noodle-heavy family, I’ve noticed that the quality of pool noodles is far from uniform. Some generic models we’ve bought in the past are made of especially lightweight foam that fails to hold up well through regular noodle battles or lengthy exposure to sunlight (polyethylene degrades in UV light). Their interior cells break down while their surface flakes off into tiny pieces of microplastic—which are not good for anyone. We’ve seen degraded noodles simply split in half when a kid jumping off our dock hits it. That’s why both of our picks are known brands made of denser, more durable foam that readily sheds water. If you care for them and keep them out of the sun when you aren’t using them, they can last and last. One of our Big Bosses is looking a little ragged but going on its third summer.
The hole in the center is crucial. It makes the noodles more fun to play with, because you can create a water-cannon effect by filling it up and exhaling into one end. It also makes them marginally more buoyant—provided that you don’t submerge their hollow ends. Our neighborhood testers universally panned solid noodles for this reason.
We also tested a 2-inch-diameter noodle, and the kids and adults uniformly said it was too small and skinny, and not especially good at floating. In the end my 9-year-old daughter, my 6-year-old son, and their friends decided that the Big Boss was fun, but the 2½-inch Wacky Noodle was the perfect size for their smaller stature.
Airtime with the Wacky Noodle.
Following two seasons of intense yet kid-friendly water gun yard battles, and tests of 1different water guns across three categories, we’ve chosen a new pick, the Stream Machine TL-750, as the best plunger-style water gun. Capable of reaching targets more than 5feet away, this water gun is probably the best fit for big kids or adults, because of its 22-inch length. Since the Stream Machine lacks a reservoir and drains quickly, it’s an option best used in a pool, or where you have a huge water supply.
Nerf Super Soaker Squall Surge
This neat little soaker features an air-pump-pressurized chamber like those found in Super Soakers from the ’90s, allowing continuous fire.
If you don’t have access to a bucket for quick filling of the aforementioned model, or if you live in a more water-scarce environment, our newest top pick, the Nerf Super Soaker Squall Surge, is an internal-reservoir model that packs a solid—if not quite as drenching—wallop.
After looking at dozens of sand-castle sets and reading reviews about them, we realized that shoppers have been lulled into accepting that such things are meant to be cheap plastic crap and that they’re going to break pretty quickly. But the Green Toys Sand Play Set shows that you don’t have to settle for mediocrity. We tested it this year against new competition, and it’s our pick for the second year running. What’s more, as the company’s name suggests, Green Toys makes all of its products from recycled plastic (milk jugs, in particular). So not only are you getting a set that will last for years, but you’re also purchasing a product that is helping to reduce the amount of plastic waste rather than contribute to it.
The Green Toys Sand Play Set in action.
The Green Toys set has only a few items, but they’re high quality, and they won’t break.
I also looked at popular toy maker Melissa & Doug’s Sunny Patch Seaside Sidekicks Sand Baking Set. It’s the most well-rounded set in the company’s lineup, which for some reason focuses on kitchen-themed toys like measuring cups, spoons, and whisks. But it lacks a basic shovel, and what’s more, the lid popped off the bucket, causing the entire set to spill all over the street. I’d pass on this.
You can find countless other cheap plastic options that will give you more short-term bang for your buck, but don’t be surprised when they break quickly or even arrive broken. For the most well-rounded, reasonably priced, and durable beach-toy set, go with the Green Toys Sand Play Set. The company’s eco-friendly approach is the icing on the cake. —Mark Lukach
Stearns Puddle Jumper Deluxe
After testing all the notable contenders out there, I can say with confidence as a swim coach, former lifeguard, and parent that the Stearns Puddle Jumper Deluxe is the best flotation device for kids and the only one we recommend buying (it’s also available in a basic version that has slightly rougher fabric and fewer design choices for a few bucks less). The Puddle Jumper is a welcome and safer improvement on the water wings you might have worn as a kid. It’s a favorite among parents, swim coaches, and even the US Coast Guard, which has approved it as a Type flotation device. We spent another couple of hours this year to check if any new competitors had come out, but it’s still easily the best.
At its core, the Puddle Jumper is a lot like water wings but better and safer in every way. The design incorporates two rings that fit around a swimmer’s arms. Each ring is filled with foam, which means that although they won’t deflate for easy packing, they also won’t deflate while in use and endanger your child. The rings are attached to a foam pad that sits on the swimmer’s chest and also keeps the child’s head out of the water. Snapping the whole thing in place is a strap that goes around the back.
The Stearns Puddle Jumper is part life jacket, part water wings.
Most competitors don’t even come close to matching the Puddle Jumper’s level of safety, nor do they carry the same certifications and endorsements, but just to make sure we weren’t missing anything, we called in the Speedo Kids Begin to Swim Printed Neoprene Vest for comparison. However, we needed only a few minutes of testing each device to see why the Puddle Jumper was overwhelmingly superior. The Speedo vest’s lack of arm wings gives the wearer a bit more range of movement while still being buoyant enough, but the buoyancy is not directed toward helping to keep the child’s head above water. When I put the Speedo vest on my son, he noticeably struggled to keep himself afloat. Combine that result with an uncomfortable crotch strap that’s required to keep the vest from sliding around, and you can clearly see that the Puddle Jumper is the better product.
Before you buy, know that floaties (like most child-safety products) are not without controversy.
But before you buy, know that floaties (like most child-safety products) are not without controversy. I’ve read dozens of articles about whether kids should use flotation devices. As is the case for all other parents, safety is my primary concern, but I also don’t want to delay my kid’s ability to learn to swim on his own. I’ve boiled the debate down to the following:
As a former scuba instructor and a professional underwater photographer with 20-plus years of diving experience, I can say that my diving mask is one of my most important pieces of equipment. Since I don’t have time to spend fiddling with a mask that fogs or leaks, I’ve always opted for high-end dive masks, because the budget-oriented sets I’ve tried in the past have never performed well enough to justify a purchase.
The U.S. Divers Lux mask offers more comfort and a wider field of view than all the others in our test group.
The silicone-lined Lux mask offered more comfort and better visibility than any other mask I tried. It has separate left and right lenses, which allows the mask to flex to fit your face (single-pane designs can press uncomfortably against the nose). Usually a dual-pane design affords less visibility, but the Lux mask gets around that by including side-view windows that give you a greater degree of peripheral visibility.
Compared with last year’s pick, the Cressi Perla, the Lux is larger, but it makes up for that with its comfortable feel and wider field of vision. It also has a one-way purge valve at the base of the nose pocket that lets you blow out any water that might get in—this feature is typically found solely on higher-end scuba masks, and the Lux was one of only two budget masks I tested that had it. A whistle is built into the purge for signaling purposes, too. A whistle should almost never be necessary, but it’s good to have in case a snorkeler drifts too far from a boat and needs assistance. The position of this whistle is also ideal, as you don’t need to remove the mask to use it—just get above water and blow!
To test how good the snorkels were at staying dry, I dove to the bottom of a swimming pool and tilted my head forward at a 90-degree angle. The Aqua Lung Lux snorkel bundled with the Lux set was the driest of all the models I tested. It’s designed to be submersible without letting in water.
Rather than making do with a crappy promotional Frisbee or one from 7-Eleven, get a substantial disc like the Discraft Ultra-Star 17We asked Make magazine editor (formerly of Wired and Outside) and Major League Ultimate player Nathan Hurst to help us pick. He plays for the San Francisco Dogfish and has tried every Frisbee on the market. (Note: Wham-O has a trademark on the Frisbee name, so the products are often called “flying discs” and the sport is called “Ultimate.”)
Comparing the Pulsar with the Ultra-Star, the Pulsar “feels harder in the hand, and the disc flies farther and floats longer, but is more difficult to control,” Hurst said. The Pulsar’s biggest drawback for casual and professional use is that its deep, sharp edges and hard plastic are so rough on your hands that professionals have started wearing gloves. “Meanwhile, the Ultra-Star continues to be used in most other non-MLU play, from kids to college to amateur to screwing around on the beach,” Hurst noted. The Ultra-Star fits perfectly in most people’s hands, and even though it weighs the same 17grams as the Pulsar, it is easier to grip and balance—both customer reviews and Yahoo Answers reflect that sentiment.
As for weight, you can go up to 200 grams. That heavier weight is supposed to be best for playing in the wind, but Hurst said the feature was “just a gimmick,” so we’d stick to the standard 17grams. For children or beginners, Hurst likes the junior-size Discraft J-Star, which weighs only 150 grams and measures 9½ inches wide in contrast to the regular Ultra-Star’s 10¾-inch diameter. —Alexander George
When it comes to riding waves, the best gear has everything to do with personal preference, size, and style. But after 1hours of research and testing, we’re confident that the Morey Mach 42-Inch Boogie combined with Churchill Makapuu Fins will please first-timers while leaving plenty of room for getting into advanced surfing.
A great view from behind the Mach 7.
The board from Morey (a Wham-O brand nowadays) is our pick for most bodyboarders for the second year in a row because it’s accessible enough for beginners and can grow with you as your skills develop. Even pro-level bodyboarders we interviewed said they’d gladly ride this thing today, and all of them recommended it as the best board for beginners. ¥11,667
Of course, some people want to pay more. If you’re a hardcore user who wants to upgrade, we also like the slightly stiffer Custom X XPE, and we particularly love the agile Style Loaded Crescent Tail by Mike Stewart’s Science Bodyboards. The differences between these upgrade choices and the Mach didn’t become apparent until we were in expert surf, however, so neither one merits paying more unless you’re planning on getting serious.
Safe and convenient
It is best to check the security settings of the nerf gun before buying. This advice is especially necessary when the toy is purchased for children. Make sure that the precautions of use are clearly marked with the reference of the toy and it has great maneuverability. For maneuverability, choose a light toy that should not normally exceed 2kg so that the child can keep well and handle it. Furthermore, also take into account the size of the toy that should fit the hands and not too large.
A gun would be incomplete without ammunition. Before buying, check what type of ammunition you should load. Normally each type of gun has its own ammunition but standard ammunition is the dart. So check how many darts are delivered with the gun you want to purchase. Not to be out of ammunition, ask if it is possible to replace these darts with other models on the market in case you lost the gun.
